Not all kibble is created equal. If you're feeding kibble as the base of your pet’s diet, make it count by reading the ingredients list first. Here’s what to look for (and what to avoid) when choosing a high-quality option:

LOOK FOR:

Animal Protein

Choose pet food made with real animal ingredients like chicken, beef, or salmon.

Mainly Meat

Meat should always be the primary ingredient in high-quality pet food. Too many grains = red flag.

Natural Preservatives Only

Choose kibble preserved with natural alternatives to synthetic chemicals like tocopherols (a form of Vitamin E), rosemary extract, or ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).

AVOID:

Low-Quality Meat

Avoid vague terms like “poultry or animal meal.” If they’re not naming the animal source, they’re not using high-quality protein.

By-Products

Low-quality ingredients, such as bone and cartilage, tend to be inconsistent in quality and hard to digest.

Too Many Grains

Many brands use a misleading labeling tactic called Ingredient Splitting where fillers like rice bran and brewer’s rice are listed as separate ingredients to make meat appear higher on the list.

Wheat, Corn, Soy

Avoid chemical preservatives like BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, and propyl gallate — all of which have been linked to health risks.

Artificial Preservatives/Additives

Feeding a better kibble is one of the most important upgrades you can make for your pet — and by replacing just 10% to 25% of their calories with real, whole food (like our freeze-dried treats, supplements, and meals), you elevate their nutrition even further.
